Best Cooking holidays in Europe
Cooking holidays where you participate in creating scrumptious food are very popular. Here’s a round-up of some of the best cooking holidays in Europe for 2015….in our humble opinion.
Chalet Savoie Faire – French Alps, France
I have to admit to be a little smitten by Chalet Savoie Faire! Being in the French Alps you’d think they’d be were more winter sports focused than cooking, however, they do both and then some! They offer:
- winter sports accommodation and chalet rental just 30 minutes away from Meribel, Courchevel and Valmorel
- mountain biking holidays in the Alps,
- hiking in the Alps
All that in addition to their stunning cooking holidays. Nikki Shields owns and runs the chalet with her husband Hugh. From Melbourne, Australia Nikki has been living and cooking in France for 25 years now – central to their cooking holidays is this snippet from Nikki which we love: “Most of all you will laugh and learn in a relaxed atmosphere”.
Chalet Savoie Faire is a typical Savoyard barn which has been lovingly transformed into a luxury mountain bed and breakfast. In size terms it’s a perfect blend having space whilst remaining small and personal; the chalet sleeps up to 8 people.
Nikki’s cookery courses in the French Alps range from a half day class to a full 6 day cookery course. You don’t have to stay with them to partake – you may be nearby and fancy doing a half or full day cooking course with Nikki. Call her, have a chat and together you’ll work out the perfect solution.
The longer courses involve visits to local markets, whilst any courses may involve a cuisine type to suit your palate – traditional French, French cuisine with a modern twist, Thai or vegetarian. Nikki has extensive experience and training in all of these.
A one day cookery class without accommodation costs €175. Nikki also offers 3 day / night, 4 day / night and 5 days / nights variants at €695 / €770 and €895 respectively – all of these are full board.
It’s easy to get to Chalet Savoie Faire. Both Geneva and Lyon airports are just a 90 minute drive away. Chambery airport is closer still at 1 hour. A small town called Moutiers is only 10km or so away, and here you can travel by train to London St. Pancras in winter, and all year to Paris. Easy peasy lemon squeezy as my children would say!

Le Pistou, Uzes, France
Our paths could have crossed with Petra a few year ago when we lived all of 15 minutes from each other near the Canal du Midi around the Narbonne area…. unfortunately it never happened. Since then Petra has moved her French cooking school to Uzes, a stunningly beautiful French town near Avignon. She’s located slap bang in the centre of Uzes which affords all guests the beauty of really getting to know Uzes and experiencing a little of French live in this stunning location.
Petra has been a food writer and chef for 30 years now and brings all her experience to bear in her selection of food and wine courses.
There are courses covering Mediterranean and Provençal cuisine, Moroccan, Mexican and Indonesian, effortless but gorgeous food for summer entertaining as well as an Imaginative Fish Dishes course. There’s truly something for everyone.
Courses cost around €100 – €120 for a 3 hour course followed by lunch. If you’re staying in or near Uzes… or Avignon … or the general Pont du Gard area and are looking for an activity to do one day, think of spending a half day with Petra on one of her fabulous cookery courses in the hear of Uzes. She’s very easy to find. Simply head for the very centre of Uzes and you’ll find her beside the Tourist Information Office (handy…) and a mere 2 minute walk from the Place aux Herbes.

KaliKalos – Vegetarian cooking holidays in Greece
Kalikalos offer holistic vegetarian holidays in Greece. Their location is stunning being on Mt. Pelion looking out to see. They offer other courses in addition to vegetarian cookery courses – there are also 7 day wellbeing holidays in Greece and wellbeing holidays in Greece. KaliKalos works as a community each week. Everyone gets involved in everything to help make the centre run smoothly which make for a perfect environment to make new friends, and laugh lots. The centre is off the beaten track yet close to the beaches of the Aegean. Accommodation is varied ranging from hotel rooms to tents!
Chef Natalie di Giuseppe has been cooking professionally for over 20 years. Daughter of an Italian father and a Greek mother, Natalie combines the flair of Italian cuisine with the best of Greek vegetarian recipes.
She only has a maximum of 6 participants on her courses, hence you’re guaranteed to really get involved and have fun. The focus will be on both some of the more popular Greek vegetarian dishes as well as some of the lesser known such as feta and roast garlic turnovers and sun dried tomato fritters, using tomatoes which you will bake for two days on the marble stairs in the Aegean sun. We love the sound of that! And the icing on the cake? After each lesson you’ll have a Greek food fest as you sit down together to taste your new creations.
The Kalikalos Centre at Hotel Martiou is located at the edge of the village of Kissos, 4miles (7 km) from the sea, and 25 miles (40km) east of Volos, Greece’s 6th largest city. Volos is 4 hr by bus from Athens, 2½ hr from Thessaloniki and 1½ hr by “Flying Dolphin” hydrofoil from Skiathos island. There are direct flights to Volos (VOL) via Air Berlin, Ryan air and Monarch air (from London, Gatwick and Manchester).
